“In Every Long Tunnel, There Is a Green Light”

A Birthday Reflection on Resilience, Community, and Growth

I celebrated my birthday yesterday, and although I shared parts of this reflection on other platforms, I also wanted to share it here because I am truly thankful for the community that has helped shape me into who I am today. Yesterday was more than a birthday celebration for me.

It was a moment of deep reflection, gratitude, and pause. An opportunity to recount my journey over the past several years. From navigating new systems and cultures, to transitioning my career and life across three countries, and eventually becoming a dual citizen, it has been an incredible journey to witness and experience.

There were moments of uncertainty, starting over professionally, and learning how to navigate unfamiliar environments while still holding on to my goals and identity. And through it all, I kept remembering my father’s favorite words to us growing up: “In every long tunnel, there is a green light.”

It is such a powerful metaphor.

But getting to that green light often requires resilience, adaptability, courage, redirection, staying grounded in faith and personal beliefs, surrounding yourself with the right people, and developing the right mindset.

Sometimes, it is easy to lose sight of our goals while walking through the tunnel. The journey requires confidence. It requires overcoming self-doubt. It requires continuing to put in the work despite failures and rejections.

I pause with deep gratitude. I am incredibly thankful for my network and community who have walked this journey with me, family, friends, mentors, teachers, colleagues, and everyone who has supported me along the way.

Many of you supported me in ways you may never fully realize through opportunities, encouragement, feedback, conversations, introductions, prayers, and simply believing in me during seasons when I was still finding my footing. Every conversation, every opportunity, and every word of encouragement has mattered more than you know.

There truly is a green light at the end of the tunnel. I am living proof.

Today, as a dual licensed lawyer, workplace investigator, and human rights professional, I often reflect on how much growth can come from persistence, community, and refusing to give up on yourself. From my roots in Nigeria to the life and career I have built today, this journey has stretched me, strengthened me, humbled me, and shaped me. And I know without a doubt that I did not get here alone.

“I am because you are.”

To anyone still walking through any kind of tunnel:

Keep going.

Stay grounded.

Keep building.

Keep believing.

Sometimes the tunnel is shaping you long before you ever see the light.

The green light is ahead.
